If you are looking for a rugged beauty that stands up to the summer heat while delivering a spectacular show of lavender-blue blooms, theChastetree (Vitex agnus) is your backyard hero. This fast-growing multi-stemmed shrubor small tree if you prune it uptypically reaches a manageable 10′ feet tall and wide, making it a perfect focal point or privacy screen. It thrives in full, blazing sun and actually prefers our well-drained soils, rewarding you with aromatic, sage-scented foliage and spiked flowers that butterflies and bees simply cannot resist. The best part for those of us living near the wilder edges of town is its toughness; once established, it is remarkably drought-tolerant and stands its ground against local wildlife. It is the definition of a low-maintenance, high-impact plant that brings a cooling splash of Mediterranean color to the height of our summer sizzle.
