Its the secret ingredient for perfect drainage and aeration in your soil mixes! Perlite is a lightweight, porous material that permanently creates tiny air pockets within dense soil. This allows oxygen to reach the roots, preventing compaction and the dreaded root rot caused by overwatering.
-
Best For:
-
Seed Starting: Creating light, sterile mixes for delicate seedlings.
-
Potting Mixes: Amending heavy or traditional potting soils to improve drainage for houseplants and containers.
-
Rooting Cuttings: Providing a clean, highly aerated medium for propagation.
-
Key Actionable Steps:
-
How to Mix: Blend perlite into your potting soil at a ratio of 1 part perlite to 3 or 4 parts soil. For succulents or sensitive plants, increase the ratio (up to 50% perlite).
-
Root Rot Prevention: By improving drainage, perlite ensures water quickly passes through the pot, making it harder to accidentally overwater your plants.
-
Pro Tip: Wear a mask when handling, as the fine dust can be irritating to the lungs. Perlite is sterile and chemically inert.
